Here are a few of our most frequently asked questions...

1. Can Underfloor Heating only be installed downstairs? No, underfloor heating can be installed on all floors, Warm Soles can offer a solution to all floor constructions.

2. Will my energy bills increase with Underfloor Heating? No, underfloor heating can offer large savings compared to traditional heating installations.

3. Will the Underfloor Heating be too hot to walk on bare footed? No, underfloor heating runs at a much lower temperature to radiators without losing performance. Underfloor heating will be comfortable to walk on bare footed. After all, we're Warm Soles! If for any reason it is hot to walk on bare footed something is wrong and we would recommend getting in touch.

4. Can I have a mixture of Underfloor Heating and Radiators in my property? Yes, underfloor heating and radiators can be used in the same property, for example underfloor heating downstairs and radiators upstairs - providing the plumbing has been designed or altered correctly to operate both.

5. Will I need a new boiler? This depends on the extent of work being carried out. Usually if you are replacing radiators with underfloor heating you will not need to replace the boiler providing it is fully functioning.

6. Isn’t Underfloor Heating only suitable for tiled floors? No, underfloor heating will work with most floor coverings - ranging from tiles to wood and carpet. The output will however vary depending on the floor covering resistance. Remember if fitting carpet , the recommendation is a maximum of 2.5 tog (including underlay).

7. Do I need to dig out all floors to install Underfloor Heating? No, there are many different types of overlay systems on the market which can be installed onto the existing floor - some as low as 15mm in a screed - so there is no need to dig out existing floors.

8. Will Underfloor Heating damage my furniture? No, the floor surface temperature should not exceed 29 degrees Celsius - and this is not hot enough to damage furniture.

9. Should I install Underfloor Heating under kitchen units? This is a strongly debated subject but at Warm Soles we will always opt to install under units unless otherwise advised, reasons for this include but are not limited to:

  1. Normally we are unaware of the kitchen unit layouts when designing the system.

  2. Actual final layout often differs from any information provided when we install/recommend our layout.

  3. Refurbishment of kitchens and therefore redesign of kitchen unit layout may result in inactive floor areas where underfloor heating was previously omitted from under the units.

  4. If the kitchen is changed to a different room within the house, there would then be 'inactive' floor areas.

  5. Some kitchen units have no plinths which gives us a greater heating capacity to serve the kitchen.

  6. Underfloor heating under the units will deter condensation and mould under units associated with cold and sealed air voids on outside walls.

  7. Typically, perishable/fresh food is not stored at low level in kitchen units and therefore any adverse effects of installing underfloor heating under units is not normally an issue.

  8. If there is still concern about underfloor heating under units we will recommend the floor surface area under the cupboards is insulated to restrict heat transfer. This insulation layer can then be removed at a later date when the kitchen is refurbished, etc., and therefore not impact the possible future exposed/active floor area.
